Case Study: Helping Adam Barratt get race-ready for his Sheffield Half Marathon
Adam Barratt ran the Sheffield Half-Marathon in support of St Luke’s Hospice, where his dad Mark was looked after last year before he passed away from Pancreatic Cancer.
Here we look at Adam’s Activ Run Fit assessment, completed by our Director Andrew Okwera…

“I have seen Adam over the years for a few different things and, in the past year, for a recurrence of a calf issue when he runs long distance. As he was wanting to do his first half marathon, he came to see me as part of the Activ Run Fit service we provide for our patients. I completed a running assessment and recorded him running on the treadmill in the clinic. The assessment showed that he tended to run in a bent forward position that caused him to 'sink' as he landed. This was related to some weakness and postural issues which had caused him a previous back issue.
With his back, hips, knees and ankles bent too far as he ran, his legs acted more like a spring rather than pushing him forwards. His calves then took the brunt of the force that was created and he got muscular pains. My tips for Adam were to stand taller as he ran (chest up, bottom in), swing his arms more to get more drive and try to avoid letting himself sink forward as he got fatigued. This would be helped with strength and stamina exercises I gave him that he completed religously. He also came back for sports massages with Debbie, our sports therapist, in our Totley clinic. We were so pleased for him when he completed his first half marathon with no major issues.
From all of us here at Activ, well done Adam!”
