How Physiotherapy Treatments Including Dry-Needling, Acupuncture And Acupressure Can Help Patients Manage Menopausal Symptoms

Menopause is the end of a women’s menstrual cycle due to the loss of ovarian follicular function. The time when menstrual periods permanently stop following a natural change related to a decrease in the ovaries production of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. It can sometimes be confirmed by measuring hormone levels in blood or urine.

The typical age is between 45 and 55 years but can be earlier or may be induced by surgical procedures or medical interventions that cause cessation of ovarian function. (Menopause and World Health Organisation).

During menopause and perimenopause (the period of time leading up to menopause), physical symptoms can include hot flushes, palpitations, more 'severe that normal' headaches, muscle and joint pain, loss of libido and recurrent recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs).

So how can we help ?

A recent study published in the BMJ (British Medical Journal) suggests that acupuncture may help ease menopausal symptoms.

They found that acupuncture using specific points helped reduce hot flushes, excess sweating, mood swings, sleep disturbances and skin and hair problems in women suffering with moderate to severe symptoms.

I recently attended a training course on Dry Needling & Medical Acupuncture For Women’s Health.

The focus of my training covered a number of women’s conditions including postpartum issues: diastasis recti, postpartum depression and postpartum pelvic girdle pain.

I have always been interested in the menopause and other female health conditions including low mood and motivation, headaches and migraines, hot flushes, overactive bladder, insomnia, nausea, carpal tunnel syndrome, wider joint pain and stiffness and dysmenorrhoea (period pains).

For ladies who do not like needles or acupuncture, I have also taken further training in massage therapy – focusing on acupressure points that may also help ease the symptoms of menopause.

If you would like to speak to Debbie in confidence about any menopause symptoms you may be experiencing, or would like to book an appointment for a 'Menopause Massage' involving acupressure or acupuncture, please contact us on 0114 2352727
