Plastic is Not Fantastic
PLASTIC FREE JULY is a global movement 'that helps millions of people to be part of the solution to plastic pollution – so we can have cleaner streets, oceans and beautiful communities.'
It's about encouraging people to avoid single-use plastic items like cups, drink bottles or plastic food wrap – where possible – by choosing durable, reusable non-plastic alternatives.
Did you know that 12 million tonnes of plastic finds its way into the ocean every single year, with 9.5 million tonnes of this entering the ocean from the land! Around 1.75 tonnes of plastic is being chucked into the sea directly from the fishing and shipping industry.
Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down and 40% of it is being used just once before it is thrown away. The Pacific Ocean has the largest accumulation of plastic in the world.
Plastic bottles, food wrappers and cotton buds are among the top ten prevalent microplastics found in European freshwater rivers which are then carried to the world's oceans, according to the City to Sea charity – which aims to stop plastic pollution at source. The health implications of microplastic deposits in our bodies are not yet fully known.
This month, communities, schools and businesses worldwide have been promoting activities to instill a sense of hope and optimism when it comes to the mammoth task of reducing plastic waste.
The Three R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, are the main ways we can reduce single-use plastic. Bringing a reusable coffee cup to our cafe, finding plastic-free alternatives to replace wrapped fruit, veg and baked goods, and swapping plastic straws for metal or bamboo ones are small steps which make a huge difference in the long-term. During the summer, the amount of plastic waste goes up by 40% and most of it ends up in the sea.
Environmentalist Sir David Attenborough recently spearheaded a study that estimated there are more than 150 million tonnes of plastics in the world's oceans; resulting in the deaths of 1 million birds and 100,000 sea mammals each year. Around 87% of poorly managed waste ends up in nature, says the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
Here in our Totley and Hope clinics, we are always looking at improving our eco-conscious credentials – cutting down on the amount of plastic we use wherever possible.
We are proud to promote the range of products by MoveWell which include massage rollers made from sustainable cork. All of our plush, waffle-textured pillowcases on our treatment couches are made from eco-friendly bamboo, and our smallest 'green' items are our plastic-free cotton buds.
Through education, campaigns and initiatives such as Plastic Free July, we all know that plastic is definitely not fantastic!
