What Do I Wear To See My Physio?
'What do I wear to see my physio?' is a common question asked by our Activ patients. The golden rule is loose fitting clothing that allows your physio to treat your specific problem.
Our sports massage therapist Katie explains; ' When I was on my course, all attendees had to volunteer to be the 'patient' and those of us wearing clothes that were too restrictive – tight shorts instead of baggy ones which could be rolled up – were advised this was not helpful for the physio. Also, for females, a bra top with an open back is preferable to a sports bra or any racer back bra which covers the centre of the spine.'
When visiting a physio for lower back pain, you should wear loose, comfortable clothing that can easily be moved or removed. This allows the physio to access the area and perform a thorough evaluation.
Tops: Wear a loose-fitting shirt or top that can easily be lifted or removed and allow your physio to assess your ROM (Range Of Motion).
Trousers: Wear a loose style or loose leggings or yoga trousers that can easily be lowered. Andy said, 'The awkward moments can come when someone has a knee or hip issue and is wearing skinny jeans or leggings. I often wonder if we should have a stock of shorts that we can give the patient to put on when they leave the room. It's not a problem though as we have plenty of 'modesty' towels and blankets we can use during treatment'.
Shorts: Choose mid-length shorts or loose trousers that can be rolled up to expose your knee. You may wish to wear a top layer over your shorts (on cold visits!) but make sure it can be easily lifted or removed to access the knee.
Avoid: Tight waistbands, zippers and buttons where possible.
Shoes: Wear trainers or running shoes with clean socks. Bring your preferred running shoes so your physio can assess your gait.
Hair: Tie hair back (if long).
If you have pelvic pain, low back pain and/or abdominal pain, an element of undressing is often required so wear loose, comfortable clothing that's easy to take off and move around in. You should also wear supportive shoes that allow you to perform exercises. Please note you can remove as much clothing as you feel comfortable with and, as Andy discussed earlier, we always provide clean, laundered 'modesty' towels during treatment on the couch, if needed.
Please do not hesitate to contact our friendly staff at our Totley or Hope clinics if you have any questions relating what clothes you need to wear for specific physio treatments.
